Ne esistono molti tipi: a breve e lungo periodo, regolari, semiregolari e irregolari.
Alcune non variano la luminositÓ per cause fisiche intrinseche, ma in conseguenza di eclissi.

I = Variabili del tipo Irregolari

RCrB = Variabili del tipo R- Corona Borealis

N = Variabili del tipo Nova
